Wine Australia, Australian Grapevine Research Institute, and Australian Grape & Wine are inviting winemakers and grape growers to participate in Australia’s national sustainability program – Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.
Sustainability has emerged as a central element for retailers and consumers. Also, the high requirements for products easily demonstrate how the demand for sustainability is surging all around the globe.
The Sustainable Winegrowing Australia program will monitor and report the vineyard’s environmental, social initiatives, and economic scenario each year. This not only showcases the sustainability features but also helps its members to improve their practices continuously.
Battaglene mentioned sustainability needs to be initiated at the local level, but the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia program helps to demonstrate both the collective and individual credentials to the whole world.
There has been a significant transformation in the area of consumer sentiment towards sustainability, and it’s growing to affect the global wine sector. The government, retailers, and consumers – are all paying attention to the concept of sustainability.
Nowadays, consumers’ buying decisions are highly influenced by the concept of sustainability, and therefore supply chain requirements & retail trends are making rapid efforts to catch up quickly.
The program offers easy assessment and reporting to facilitate a complete picture, including the social practices, economic and environmental concerns of producers in the vineyard. However, the advantages of being a member of the program include benchmarking the production activities, thereby helping individuals with insights on cost-saving and enhancing efficiency for the longer term.
The program helps around 700 members with the proper assessment and sustainability management. There has been a significant spike in the membership of the program from last year. For instance, there is a 30% spike in last year’s membership and 22% growth till 30th September this year. It proves that the program has gained significant traction among members of the wine community.
Some of the key members in the program include Duxton Vineyards, Mount Langi Ghiran, See Saw Wines, Devil’s Lair, and Gemtree Wines.
Sustainable Winegrowing Australia is among the top 40 founding members all around the globe who are engaged with forces to scale up the sustainability practices in the global wine sector.
The currently found – sustainable wine round table is a non-profit and independent multi-stakeholder roundtable that will supervise the Australian program that actively contributes to set sustainability goals and standards for wine.
